TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Maxime Cressy takes on Christopher O’connell in the third round on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022.
Will Christopher O’connell build some more momentum after having caused a big upset in the last round? Will Maxime Cressy continue to play well at the start of this year as he aims to make it to the latest stage of a grand slam he has ever been? Both players would have not been expected to make it this far this week if we were talking about them a month ago, but here they are. Who will make their way to the fourth round of the 2022 Australian Open?
Christopher O’connell put on a great performance against the always tough Diego Schwartzman, beating the Argentine in straight sets. Christopher is not a player who many expected anything of this week, but he has been able to make the most of his wildcard and he put his head down. O’connell will be very proud of his progress at the 2022 Australian Open, and he would love to get into the second week here. However, he meets a big serving and very in form opponent in Maxime Cressy.
Maxime Cressy has been in great form to start the 2022 season, making his maiden ATP Tour final in Melbourne a few weeks ago, and now making his way to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open. Cressy will be happy with his performances this week, beating John Isner in a tight 5 setter and then beating the qualifier Thomas Machaq in the second round. Cressy likes these conditions because it allows for his serve to get more height and be in optimal positions for volleys, but he will meet an in form Christopher O’connell.
Maxime Cressy and Christopher O’Connell have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Christopher has beaten a much higher ranked opponent this week, I think that the match was a bit of a lucky one and if Schwartzman would have won that first set, it would have been a different story. Cressy, on the other hand, has played well for the last few weeks consistently and I think he will use his trademark serve and volley to get himself into the second week of the 2022 Australian Open.
