TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Andy Murray takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, January 18th, 2021.
Will Nikoloz Basilashvili get the win? Will Andy Murray pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have yet another matchup between the two, and one that promises to be of great interest. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open?
Andy Murray has been steadily getting back on the rise in the tennis world, making some big moves and beating some great players, most recently reaching the final of the Sydney Open where he lost to the top 20 player Aslan Karatsev. Murray has been able to get his level much higher since his almost retirement 3 years ago right here in Australia, and he will be able to demonstrate how far he has come this tournament as he takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili yet again. He just beat him a couple days ago, as well as beating up on him at Wimbledon, so I definitely expect Murray to get through this one, even if he has a little trouble.
Nikoloz Basilashvili has a tough match ahead of him, despite being the much higher ranked player and at times playing one of the biggest games on the ATP Tour, he is simply too inconsistent especially against a player like Andy Murray who seems to have all the answers against him. Basilashvili still is an incredible player, and he will be motivated for the slams, and I most certainly expect him to learn from some of his mistakes, attempting to stay in the rallies a little bit more against Murray, which will give him a big chance. However, the fact that Murray leads their head to head and just beat him recently is too big of an advantage for the Brit. Let’s see if Basilashvili can push the legend as the two clash for a place in the second round here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Andy Murray and Nikoloz Basilashvili have met twice before, with Andy Murray leading the head to head 2-0. Their first meeting came last year at Wimbledon, where Murray won quite easily, it’s pretty unsurprising considering how good he is on grass compared to Basilashvili, who really has a game built more for slower hard courts. The court is playing pretty fast this year, and I assume that Basilashvili will not take that well. It should be a close encounter, but Murray will ultimately take him down in four or five sets, booking himself a place in the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open.
