TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Cameron Norrie takes on Sebastian Korda in the first round on Monday, January 17th, 2022.
Will Sebastian Korda build on his solid end to the 2021 season and make a breakthrough this year as a youngster? Will Cameron Norrie continue to build on his amazing 2021 season and hope to not just be a one-season wonder? Both players will be determined to get some momentum going here at the 2022 Australian Open, however, only one will make their way to the round of 64. Who will it be?
Sebastian Korda is yet to play a tournament this year in preparation for the Australian Open, but it is sure that he has been working hard behind closed doors to find his rhythm and wear off some rust that may have arisen over the last 2 months. Sebastian had a great end to the 2021 season, reaching the Final of the Next Gen ATP Finals and beating all of his opponents except for Carlos Alcaraz. Sebastian Korda is great in these conditions with his serve and long groundstrokes, but he will have to ensure his backhand is at its best as he now meets the lefty, Cameron Norrie.
Cameron Norrie will not be very happy with his start to the 2022 season, having lost all of his matches at the ATP Cup, making him currently be on a 6 match losing streak which started last year at the Paris Masters. In 2021, Cameron was incredible, winning a couple of titles on the ATP Tour, being up there with the most wins of the year, and making his way to the ATP Finals as an alternate. Norrie is a great player and over the last week he will have been working hard to ensure he does not lose early at the 2022 Australian Open, but he will also know that he has a tough start to the draw against Sebastian Korda.
Cameron Norrie and Sebastian Korda have met 1 time before, with Sebastian Korda leading the head to head 1-0. They met early last year where Sebastian won in straight sets in Delray Beach. If we just look at this match on paper, you would expect for Norrie to cruise through this match as he is much higher ranked and he won nearly 60 matches last year. However, I expect for tight match here. Cameron is yet to win a match this year, so he will be determined to get something going, and Sebastian has not played a match this year, so he needs to wear off some rust. I think that the rust part will probably play a factor here, which will help Norrie find some momentum at the 2022 Australian Open.
