TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Roberto Bautista Agut in the Final on Sunday, January 9th, 2021.
Will Felix Auger-Aliassime come out here and bounce back from his really bad loss in the Semi-Finals against Daniil Medvedev? Will Roberto Bautista Agut build on that superb performance he put on against Hubert Hurkacz? This is probably the most important match of the day at the 2022 ATP Cup, as it could decide whether a team wins it all, or whether the tie goes down to the doubles. Who will come out and get the vital point for their country?
Roberto Bautista Agut has been great all tournament at the 2022 ATP Cup, only losing one set along the way, and dominating the majority of his opponents on the court. Roberto played against a top 10 player in Hubert Hurkacz in the Semi-Finals, beating the Pole in 3 sets 7-6 / 2-6 / 7-6. Roberto was extremely consistent on his first and second serve, and he was continuously challenging on his return game. Roberto had quite a few moments when he could have ended the match earlier than it did, but the serve of Hurkacz got him out of trouble. When it came down to the pressure moment, however, Roberto Bautista Agut showed why he is one of the toughest opponents to beat on the ATP Tour. Will he show that to Felix Auger-Aliassime?
Felix Auger-Aliassime lost in terrible fashion in his 2022 ATP Cup Semi-Final match against Daniil Medvedev, losing in straight sets 4-6 / 0-6. Felix is a great player on his day, but similarly to his teammate, Denis Shapovalov, he can lose it when he is playing against a tough opponent and in a tight and pressure moment. The real difference maker in this match was the fact that Felix was terrible on his second serve, only winning 36% of points, and giving Medvedev a chance to basically break every time he served. As he now meets another great returner in Roberto Bautista Agut, will he find his game or struggle?
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Roberto Bautista Agut have met 3 times before, with Felix Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head 2-1. They met 1 time in 2021 at the US Open where Felix won in 5 extremely tight sets. Before that, the only important match they had played was in the Final of the 2019 Davis Cup Finals where Roberto won in straight sets. That was a pressureful environment and both teams knew that a point was vital. I think that when it comes down to who plays better with the pressure and who you can rely on to give you their best consistently, I have to back Roberto Bautista Agut to win here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
