TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Denis Shapovalov takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the Final on Sunday, January 9th, 2021.
Will Denis Shapovalov come out here and show us some amazing tennis as he aims to give Team Canada an early lead in the Final? Will Pablo Carreno Busta continue being the rock for Team Spain as they look to win their maiden ATP Cup in their second finals appearance? Both players have been solid for their teams all week, but only one will give their team an early lead at the 2022 ATP Cup. Who will it be?
Denis Shapovalov had to fight through an extremely tough encounter against Roman Safiullin of Russia in the Semi-Finals, winning that match in 3 tight sets 6-4 / 5-7 / 6-4. Denis was very consistent when his first and second serve went in, winning 76% and 74% of points respectively, however, he was not as great on his second serve as he double faulted 8 times, and gave Roman some chances to take this match to the distance. Denis will know that he has played very well for his team at the 2022 ATP Cup, but he is yet to meet a player of the caliber of Pablo Carreno Busta all tournament.
Pablo Carreno Busta has been dominant all week for Team Spain at the 2022 ATP Cup, beating all of his opponents in straight sets and not blinking even against strong opponents like Filip Krajinovic. Pablo is so underrated for what he brings to the court day in and day out, and I expect him to be ready to go here in this opening match of the Final. Pablo has every shot in his arsenal and he is very consistent, therefore it is hard to break him down, making his opponents have to take more risk. Will Pablo be able to beat the higher ranked Denis Shapovalov?
Pablo Carreno Busta and Denis Shapovalov have met 5 times before, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head 4-1. Although Denis is slightly higher ranked and many believe he has more potential in the future, he is also still trying to fully develop his game and mentality in terms of showing up in the big and important moments. Denis met Roman in the semifinals, which many would’ve thought could have been an easy win for him if he was playing at his best. Pablo is more mature and his game is the same even during pressure moments. I expect a tight match as both players will give it their best for their country at the 2022 ATP Cup, but I think that Pablo has more experience in these big moments and he will give Team Spain an early lead.
