TennisSection previews the 2022 Adelaide Open as Gael Monfils takes on Tommy Paul in the quarterfinal on Friday, January 7th, 2022.
Will Gael Monfils have a memorable Aussie summer swing this year? Or will Tommy Paul put another dent when they clash at the 2022 Adelaide Open? This is a marquee quarterfinal match between two players with an eye for the spectacular.
Gael Monfils has won more matches this week than he managed during the entire Australian summer swing last season. The top-seeded Frenchman knocked out 20-year-old Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo for the loss of three games. Cerundolo was playing in his maiden main draw match on the hard courts of the ATP Tour, and was a shadow of the player who seamlessly performed with distinction on clay. Monfils needs no reminding of his no-show in 2021. It was a horrific year for the World No. 21 who needed five months to post his first win of the calendar. Monfils can double his win tally for 2022 with victory over Tommy Paul at the Adelaide Open.
As Gael Monfils struggled to adapt, Tommy Paul had a steady climb on the ATP rankings in 2021. The North Carolina resident sits at a career-high ranking of World No. 43 after a sensational year on the ATP Tour. He clinched the first of potentially many ATP titles on the indoor hard courts of Stockholm towards the end of the regular tennis season. That could be the tonic that the American needs to compete with the best tennis players in the world. There is no doubt that Paul’s goal for the New Year is to usurp the likes of Taylor Fritz, John Isner and Reilly Opelka in the standings and become USA’s No. 1. For now his focus is on reaching his first semifinal of the year and extending his winning streak to eight matches.
Gael Monfils and Tommy Paul have not played each other at any level before their quarterfinal meeting at the 2022 Adelaide Open. Monfils is the clear favorite with the bookies following that straight sets demolition of Cerundolo. Though it could be argued, the Argentinean young gun was in unchartered territory. Tommy Paul will be a significant upgrade and certainly a steadfast competitor for the veteran Frenchman. Paul, like Monfils, is a player who can be a nuisance to play against when his game is firing on all cylinders. However, I would be slightly worried if I was a Paul fan. The manner in which he was under the cosh for most of the match against Taro Daniel in the previous round suggests he is yet to hit peak level tennis just yet.
