TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Felix Auger-Aliassime meets Cameron Norrie on Tuesday January 4th, 2022 at 3:50am EST.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie will do battle here at the 2022 ATP Cup during the tie between Canada and Great Britain. Both players had strong 2021 seasons and will be primed and ready to carry that momentum into 2022. This is sure to be a very entertaining match, who will come out on top?
Felix Auger-Aliassime is ranked #11 on the ATP Tour and is the top ranked Canadian. The young phenom has been outstanding since bursting onto the tour as a teenager, and recently broke into the top 10 at the end of the 2021 season. While he has already reached eight finals in his career at only 21 years of age, questions remain about his ability to truly break out and compete at the big events. He certainly has the potential and he will be hoping that this is the year he finally unlocks his potential. The Canadian is off to a shaky start here at the 2022 ATP Cup, going down in three difficult sets to Taylor Fritz. FAA will have to be much improved here against Cameron Norrie, perhaps the most improved player over the past season and one that is riding a wave of confidence after a phenomenal 2021 season.
Cameron Norrie is ranked number twelve in the world and is the top British player in the world. The lefty enjoyed a true breakout season in 2021 and is certainly one to watch in this upcoming season. Like his opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime, he got off to a rocky start here at the 2022 ATP Cup, going down in straight sets to Alexander Zverev. The Brit will be a very difficult opponent for FAA, with his consistency and pinpoint accuracy. He is the more level headed of the two under pressure despite lacking the firepower to hit through his opponent here, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out in Sydney.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Felix Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head 2-0. This is shaping up to be a very interesting match between contrasting styles, FAA with his explosiveness and Cameron Norrie with consistency and finesse. I can see this match going the distance and there is not much to separate the two players. After considering everything, we are going to side with Felix Auger-Aliassime to get the win here. He has the firepower to hit through anyone on the tour, and he has had the upper hand in their matches thus far. Norrie will make this incredibly hard and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win, but FAA will tough this one out and get the win for Canada here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
