TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Daniil Medvedev takes on Casper Ruud in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, November 20th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Casper Ruud pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a fascinating matchup with two opposing styles. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 ATP Finals?
Daniil Medvedev emerged from his group undefeated, but most certainly he has struggled this week, only winning in 3 sets. He played some brutal matches with very tight results, playing 5 tiebreakers, recovering a 2-4 deficit against Zverev in the 3rd set tiebreaker to win it 8-6, and saving two match points against Sinner to beat him 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker. Still, his mental strength has turned into a real weapon, and as the defending champions the conditions really suit him. He should have no problem with Casper Ruud though, who has also struggled this week and is little match for Medvedev. He has a much bigger serve, can stay in the rallies longer, has better defense, and he can even be more aggressive than him, which is huge for Medvedev as he aims to blast through Ruud and book his place in the final to battle for the 2021 ATP Finals.
Casper Ruud will have an incredibly tough match against Daniil Medvedev. He exceeded expectations to make the semifinals, taking down Andrey Rublev in 3 sets, 7-5 in the third set tiebreaker. He’s getting better and better on faster courts, but most certainly not good enough to take down Medvedev. The problem for Ruud is his serve and return aren’t that great, so his ground game isn’t enough to compete with him because Medvedev will have the upperhand at the start of most of the points. There’s a reason Ruud has never taken a set off Medvedev, and I expect that pattern to remain constant as Medvedev aims to cruise through Ruud and book himself a spot in the final at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud have met twice before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings have both come on fast courts, one in 2020 at the ATP Cup when Ruud was much worse, and this year on the grass also before Ruud got too good. Still, it’s a testament to the matchup and comparing their forms as of late and how they’ve matched up against different players, it’s incredibly difficult to imagine any result other than Medvedev in two sets. Ruud has the potential to take a set if he serves really well, but that is unlikely, and it may not even be enough as he’ll likely get them back into play anyway. Let’s see if Medvedev can continue his form to book his spot in the last two and clash for the title at the 2021 ATP Finals.
