TennisSection previews the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals as Lorenzo Musetti takes on Sebastian Baez in the Round Robin Stage on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021.
Will Sebastian Baez start his tournament off very strongly by already giving the Italian crowd a blow by beating one of their future stars? Will Lorenzo Musetti close out day one in incredible fashion and give the crowd what they want? A tight match is going to be upon us here between these two great returners. However, only one will win this opening day match at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals. Who will it be?
Sebastian Baez has had a great year in his career, winning 5 Challenger Tour titles this year and showing everyone that he is a great clay-court player. Sebastian Baez is probably the least known player in this entire Next Gen ATP Finals field as he has only played 2 main ATP Tour matches this year, and not really done much to make a name for himself outside of the Challenger Tour. Sebastian will be very happy for this opportunity, and if I were someone close to him, I would tell him to play as if he has nothing to lose here, because he really has nothing to lose! If he plays like that, perhaps he can cause an upset against the crowd-favourite in Lorenzo Musetti.
Lorenzo Musetti started off 2021 in incredible fashion, making it far in most tournaments he played in, beating a top 10 player, and taking 2 sets off Novak Djokovic at the French Open. However, since the French Open, the Italian has really lost his form and he has lost basically in the first round or second round of every tournament he has participated in. Musetti’s work in the first half of the year got him the spot here at the Next Gen ATP Finals for sure, but he will know that coming into this tournament, if he does not raise his level and find the form we know he can play with, he will struggle to get out of the gates with the high level of competition, such as Sebastian Baez.
Lorenzo Musetti and Sebastian Baez have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Lorenzo has not been at his best as of recent, there is a big difference in the level required to play in the Challenger Tour and the ATP Tour. Sebastian lacks a lot of experience on the ATP Tour, and he might come in here being distracted by the big lights, the big crowd, and the big stage. Lorenzo is somewhat used to that now, and the fact that the crowd is behind him will give him even more confidence and momentum coming into this match at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals.
