TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (1) meets Grigor Dimitrov in the First Round on Tuesday October 26th, 2021.
A blockbuster is expected here at the 2021 Vienna Open as Greek top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will face veteran Grigor Dimitrov with a spot in the Round of 16 up for grabs. Tsitsipas has been in relatively poor form over the past few tournaments and will be looking to get his season back on track as he prepares for the year end event in Turin. Can the Bulgarian veteran Dimitrov take advantage of his opponent’s poor form and cause the upset here in Austria?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the number one seed here at the 2021 Vienna Open and is currently ranked third on the ATP Tour. The Green superstar had a very strong start to the 2021 season, winning his first Masters-1000 event in Monte-Carlo and reaching his first Major Final at Roland Garros. However, he has been very inconsistent since, most notably losing in the early rounds at the US Open to teenager Carlos Alcaraz. This seems like the ideal place to get his confidence back with a strong performance, but the draw has not been kind to him as he will face a very dangerous and highly experienced opponent in Grigor Dimitrov in the First Round. Tsitsipas is still considered the heavy favorite, but Dimitrov knows exactly how to take advantage if Tsitsipas is not at his best, so the top seed will have to be careful here.
Grigor Dimitrov is ranked 21st on the ATP Tour and surprisingly is unseeded here at the 2021 Vienna Open, showing the quality of this field. The former top five player has struggled over the past few seasons but has finally turned his career around with some very solid results this year. He recently reached back to back Finals in San Diego and Indian Wells, and will be extremely confident heading into this match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, a player that he beat at this same venue last year. The Bulgarian star will be seeking to win his first tournament for the past four years and he seems primed and ready to give the top seed a run for his money.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head series being tied 1-1. Both of their matches were played last year, with Stefanos Tsitsipas winning in straight sets at Roland Garros before Dimitrov got his revenge at this same event, winning a very tough three setter. Tsitsipas is the big favorite on paper, but their respective forms are vastly different, so I think that this will be a very close encounter. I am still backing Tsitsipas to get the win here, and it will be good for him to get a tough win under his belt to regain some confidence. Grigor Dimitrov has been in good form lately and can steal a set, but ultimately Tsitsipas will win and move on to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
