TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Alex de Minaur meets Ugo Humbert on Thursday January 6th, 2022 at 3:50am EST.
Host nation Australia will face France here at the 2022 ATP Cup in a battle between two Davis Cup heavyweights. Both countries have a long history of performing well in team events and will be hoping to find success here in Sydney. Alex de Minaur will take on Ugo Humbert in the #1 Singles spot, and this should be a cracker of a match as both men have looked outstanding so far. Who will get the win?
Alex de Minaur is the 34th ranked player on the ATP Tour and is Australia’s number one here at the 2022 ATP Cup in Sydney. The young Aussie is very talented and will be hoping for a strong 2022 season so he can break into the top 20. He started in spectacular fashion by defeating world number seven Matteo Berrettini in his first match, and then pushed Daniil Medvedev for a short period before eventually falling in straight sets. His movement and counter-punching ability make him a very difficult opponent on this surface, and the home crowd will be hoping to get him past the tricky Ugo Humbert.
Ugo Humbers is ranked one spot below his opponent Alex de Minaur at #35 on the ATP Tour and like the Aussie has started with a bang here at the 2022 ATP Cup. Humbert shocked world number two Daniil Medvedev in his opening match before falling to Matteo Berrettini in his second. The Frenchman has always been extremely talented, and in the right situation is definitely capable of competing with the best players in the world. His confidence is high and he will be hopeful of defeating Alex de Minaur and getting a point for France.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Ugo Humbert leading the head to head 1-0. Both players are in similarly good form so this is shaping up to be a real battle. Humbert has probably ben the better player over the past couple of seasons, but Alex de Minaur has the crowd support and the edge in experience. All things considered, I am going to back the local player de Minaur here. The entire stadium will be behind him, and he is very used to playing in conditions like this. It won’t be a shock to see Humbert get the win, but I expect Alex de Minaur to squeeze out a very close victory here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
