TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, May 31st, 2022.
Will Carlos Alcaraz maintain his near-perfect streak on the clay? Or will Alexander Zverev shock the world and defeat the young Spaniard? While the attention in centered on Djokovic-Nadal, this encounter promises a lot in store, so who will prevail?
Carlos Alcaraz made it 14 consecutive wins on the European clay by beating big-hitting Karen Khachanov in straight sets. Alcaraz’s 6-1 6-4 6-4 win was never in doubt, and the gulf in class between the two players was as clear as night and day. Khachanov only managed to break Alcaraz’s serve once in the entire two-hour 14-minute contest and hit a whopping 35 unforced errors. Everything the Russian threw, there was an emphatic response from the other side of the net. The 19-year-old Alcaraz continues to break new ground almost every week. Reaching his first French Open quarterfinal was expected given the season he has had, but will the pressure get to him when he takes on Alexander Zverev?
Alexander Zverev, for his part, has reached the second week in each of his five trips to the French Open since 2018. Moreover, he will get another taste of a quarterfinal match at the clay slam as he aims to reach the semifinals for the second year in a row. The German ended Bernabe Zapata Miralles’ fairytale run in a close contest which ultimately ended in straight sets.
Carlos Alcaraz trails Alexander Zverev 1-2 in their head-to-head. Both Zverev wins came during the course of 2021 season, shortly before Alcaraz went into full throttle. The Spaniard has managed to turn the slide, winning their most recent meeting in the Madrid Masters final in straight sets. The pair of them havehad to save match points at the French Open to get to this stage. I have been more impressed by Alcaraz’s response since his escape from the shackles of Albert Ramos Vinolas. If the Spaniard continues to cover the court as effortlessly and dexterously as he always has, he should have the edge over the third seed.
