Kremlin Cup 2021: Marin Cilic vs. Tommy Paul Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Kremlin Cup as Marin Cilic takes on Tommy Paul in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 20th, 2021.

Will Marin Cilic move on? Will Tommy Paul pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two different playstyles. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup?

Marin Cilic got a great win to set up this meeting with Tommy Paul, despite needing 3 sets against a lesser player than Paul, it was such a great win because of his serving. He served at 98%, hitting 22 aces, and on top of that converted on ⅝ break points. Those serving numbers are insane, while it is very hard to maintain them on a match to match basis, they won’t just disappear. Tommy Paul isn’t exactly known for his returning, or his serving for that matter which is evidence as he only won 44% of points on his second serve, so if Cilic serves and converts on his break point opportunities the way he did in his first match, I think he will definitely clinch out the win here as he seeks a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.

Tommy Paul got a win in two tight sets over Mikael Ymer, needing a really tight tiebreaker and a 7-5 set to get through to take on Marin Cilic. Cilic will be a really tough opponent for him, considering the fact that Paul didn’t do a good job of protecting his second serve, and he didn’t make all that many first serves. If Paul wants to win, he will need to be really aggressive on second serves, that will be much easier said than done though, considering he barely hit a single one in his first match. Assuming Cilic serves less than 98%, if Paul sees a second serve, he must vaporize it. He must also focus on holding his serve, Cilic isn’t the best mover, so if Paul can get a good first forehand after his serve, then he might have a chance to get the win and move on to the next round at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.

Marin Cilic and Tommy Paul have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a pretty interesting matchup, with Cilic playing with pure power and really flat groundstrokes. Paul likes to play more of a safe game, using a little more topspin and good movement. On a court like this, it’s definitely the type of game that Cilic has that is favored, this court is quick, and with the way that Cilic served in his first match, he is the slight favorite to take this match, and I expect him to do so, even if it is a tight one as the two fight for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.
