TennisSection previews the 2021 Antwerp Open as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina meets Jordan Thompson in the First Round on Tuesday October 19th, 2021.
Can Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Jordan Thompson reverse their poor recent fortunes with a solid showing here at the 2021 Antwerp? Here we have two highly talented players that have not performed up to their usual high standard over the past few months, but with their experience a bounce-back is very likely to be just around the corner. Who will perform at a high enough level to get the win here?
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is unseeded here at the 2021 Antwerp Open and is currently ranked #44 on the ATP Tour. The talented young Spaniard has gone 2-7 since Wimbledon and will be desperate to find some form and end the year on a high. He is a complete all-around player that has a number of offensive weapons, most famously his excellent use of the drop-shot. However, he can be very erratic at times and his shot selection tends to be very poor, making him commit a lot of errors. When he is confident and playing well he can go toe to toe with the best of them, but we have not seen that type of tennis from him in a while. He is still the favorite here against the Australian Jordan Thompson, but he will have to be at his best against a very capable opponent on this surface.
Jordan Thompson is ranked #72 in the world and like his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is unseeded here at the 2021 Antwerp Open. The Aussie had a great run of form just after Wimbledon, reaching the Semi-Finals in Newport and Quarter-Finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta. His form has evaporated since then, and he has only won two matches in his last five events. A very solid baseliner without any major weapons, he will be looking to use his consistency to get the upper hand against Davidovich Fokina and he will have his eyes firmly set on causing the upset here against an opponent that is struggling badly. Despite being the underdog, he is very experienced and certainly capable of getting the win here if the Spaniard is not at his best.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Jordan Thompson leading the head to head series 1-0. He won back in 2019 at Roland Garros in straight sets, but that was when the Spaniard was a teenager so we cannot take too much from that result. I am expecting a scrappy match between two players that are lacking form and confidence, and it really can go either way. However, I am going to side with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win here. He has much more firepower and upside, and as long as he can limit his errors he should be able to control this match from the baseline. In his current form that is easier said than done, but Thompson isn’t at his best either so he is also hard to trust. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina should win this match in three tough sets, advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Antwerp Open.
