TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Kevin Anderson takes on Jordan Thompson in the Round of 128 on Friday October 8th, 2021.
Will Kevin Anderson move on? Will Jordan Thompson pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two players very close in level at the moment going head to head. Who will win move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Kevin Anderson has been playing some okay tennis in the last few months. He was able to win the first tournament of the year in North America in Newport. He has a good opportunity to move on here taking on Jordan Thompson. Thompson hasn’t been in as good of a form lately as Anderson has been, Anderson also generally is a good matchup for him, as he has a massive serve and Thompson isn’t really known for his return. As Anderson has a huge game, and he hasn’t been playing too poorly, I expect him to be able to get through Thompson relatively comfortably to move on here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Jordan Thompson hasn’t been playing too great, falling to a college player in the qualifying in San Diego. It will be a tough one to take out Kevin Anderson, who he doesn’t have a good record against and is a bad matchup for him anyway. Thompson isn’t known for his power or return, and I feel like his serve will also crumble down in some moments, allowing Anderson to close in on some opportunities, and being able to serve the rest of the set out. It will definitely be interesting to see if he can get some of the serves back in play and try to dictate play from the back of the court, let’s see if he can push Anderson for a spot in the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Kevin Anderson and Jordan Thompson have met twice before, with Kevin Anderson leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings came in 2016 and 2019, with the meeting in 2019 coming in Miami, Anderson won 7-5 7-5. It was relatively close, and it would seem as if Thompson had a shot as it was only 2 and a half years ago. However, this court is slower, and I just don’t feel like Thompson will be able to take advantage of that and get into some longer rallies. I feel like his serve will crumble under pressure and allow Anderson to edge him out. While I expect Thompson to be able to push Anderson a little bit, as both players are on the inconsistent side as of late, I think Anderson will edge him out and move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
