TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Casper Ruud takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the Quarter-Final on Friday, October 1st, 2021.
Will Casper Ruud move on? Will Lorenzo Sonego pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we will see if Ruud can maintain a high level of play and get past a tough test. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Casper Ruud secured a pretty solid win over Andy Murray, taking him out in straight sets, converting on ⅚ break point opportunities. While Ruud did win in two tight sets despite having 5 breaks throughout the match, it’s not necessarily a bad sign, considering that Murray has an astounding return and Ruud is definitely not known for his returning. Ruud is a great player off the ground, and while he is a well-rounded player and is the number 10 player in the world, he will have to approach facing Sonego in a much different way. Sonego will play a lot more aggressively than Murray, and while Ruud can defend pretty well, it will be difficult if his serve is constantly getting bombarded by constant pace. He should have the tactical edge as well as the ability to stay in rallies longer and shift them in his favor, as well as having a superior return, but it will for sure be a tough one as he attempts to book a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Lorenzo Sonego got a great win over Korda, taking him out in straights and playing an almost perfect match throughout. He has a very tough task ahead of him though in Casper Ruud. In order to take him out, he will have to attack him, if he can do that consistently without making too many unforced errors, I like his chances. This of course is easier said than done though, as Ruud will try to generate some longer points, slowly shifting the tide until he gets a good ball to attack and finish. The serving will be a key factor here, and if Sonego can maintain a high level, he could potentially pull off the upset. However, Ruud is still the clear favorite despite all these conditions, so it is hard to say that Sonego can do more than take a set, but it will definitely be interesting to see what he can do as he fights to move on here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Casper Ruud and Lorenzo Sonego have met once before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting was on the clay in 2020, with Ruud winning pretty easily. Ruud is commonly known as a clay court player, and while it’s for sure his best surface, he has a lot of potential to be an all court player. While his game is not quite there yet, and his tendencies to sometimes play more passive will damage him against Sonego, I still feel he’s the heavy favorite and will get through this one to progress to the semifinals here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
