TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the Round of 16 on Thursday, September 30th, 2021.
Will Felix Auger-Aliassime move on? Will Grigor Dimitrov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the hottest players on tour going up against a very talented and popular star. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Felix Auger-Aliassime has been playing great tennis, and he has a great opportunity here against Dimitrov, who has been very inconsistent this year, hardly having any results at all since the start of the year. For the type of game that he has, and the number of unforced errors that Dimitrov will likely make, I expect FAA to easily take him out and head through. He’s been serving very well and playing great shots from so many different positions on the court. He’s for sure one of the favorites to take the title, let’s see if he can show us that he still has that high level to take out Dimitrov and progress at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Grigor Dimitrov played some great tennis to get through Fuscovics. It will be a much tougher task having to take on Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has been playing some really good tennis, making the semifinals of the US Open, and playing at a high level during the Laver Cup. He has a great game for this court, hitting huge from the back of the court and serving really well. While he is for sure very inconsistent on mental terms, his game is just too good at the moment to be upset by Dimitrov, who will have to serve perfectly and cut off the angles and approach the net often if he wants a shot at FAA, let’s see if Auger-Aliassime can meet expectations and move on here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov have met twice before, with Felix Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head 2-0. Auger-Aliassime won both meetings they’ve had, coming in 2019 and 2020, both on fast surfaces and winning rather swiftly both times. He is a good matchup for Dimitrov, as he for sure has the advantage in any groundstroke rallies they’ll have, hitting much bigger and more consistently, Dimitrov also has not been serving that great, so I expect FAA to take advantage of that and set up many points in his favor from the get-go and take advantage of most opportunities he gets to grab the early win and set up momentum for the rest of the 2021 San Diego Open.
