San Diego Open 2021: Denis Shapovalov vs Taylor Fritz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Denis Shapovalov (4) takes on Taylor Fritz in the Round of 16 on Thursday, September 30th, 2021.

Will Denis Shapovalov move on? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two different but both great shot makers going head to head. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open?

Denis Shapovalov has a tough first match here against Taylor Fritz, he’s been very inconsistent since Wimbledon, and if he can get through this test, it should be a good indicator of his form and that he could stay consistent throughout the week. I think if Shapovalov serves well, then he will win. However, just due to how many errors he does make and has been making in recent weeks, I expect Fritz to get a lot of free points and win some points that way, so while I do expect Shapovalov to tough it out, I expect a close battle here, but Shapovalov has the big game to take on Fritz and for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open.

Taylor Fritz played some great tennis to get through Caruso. It will be a much tougher task having to take on Shapovalov, who despite being rather inconsistent since Wimbledon, is a top player in the world and is looking to break his little losing streak. It’s an interesting matchup, with both Shapovalov being very flashy and constantly going for winners whilst hitting very hard. Meanwhile, Fritz likes to hit big and be more stationary, but the two at their best could really bring an entertaining affair. The court could benefit both styles, but ultimately, I think the winner will be the more aggressive player, and I think that will be Shapovalov for sure, let’s see if he can meet expectations and move on here at the 2021 San Diego Open.

Denis Shapovalov and Taylor Fritz have met four times before, with Denis Shapovalov leading the head to head 3-1. They’ve met four times since 2018. And The head to heads show that this match will likely be a close one, Shapovalov, like mentioned many times, is very unpredictable. At his best, he has one of the highest levels on the ATP Tour, and while I don’t expect him to bring that, I do think this court will suit him. I think he can make fewer errors and his serves will be effective. Fritz also for sure though has some advantages held on this court, and it will not be surprising if he grabs the upset, but I’ve got to go with Shapovalov on this one anyway, let’s see if he can prove himself here and grab a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open.
