Diego is a great returner and someone always to be wary of when stepping on the tennis court. However, when it comes down to playing in hard courts, Diego can be beat slightly more easily than when we are on clay. Diego Schwartzman comes into the 2021 Laver Cup in hopes of giving Team World a vital point in their effort to win against Team Europe for the first time in Laver Cup history. Diego, however, will have a very tough challenge right from the start against the very tough hard hitting Andrey Rublev here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
Andrey Rublev also had a disappointing 2021 US Open campaign, losing in a thrilling 5-set match against Frances Tiafoe. Andrey Rublev knows that this was a match which he could have won, and I am sure that in the last couple of weeks he has been analysing what went wrong and what aspects of his game need to improve to ensure he can dominate. Andrey steps into the 2021 Laver Cup very confident, I believe, because he loves playing in indoor hard court conditions where his shots flow through the court at faster speeds, allowing him to move his opponents around more. Andrey will have to ensure his movement is also at its best as he now meets the great returner in Diego Schwartzman here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
Andrey Rublev and Diego Schwartzman have met 1 time before, with Diego Schwartzman leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2017 at the French Open where Diego won a tight 5-set match. In 2017, Diego was widely known, but Andrey Rublev was so unknown. Since then, both players have improved, but Andrey has shown much more than Diego has. If this was clay, I could see it being slightly in the edge of Schwartzman, but because we are in the indoor hard courts here in Boston, I believe that the speed of the ball will be too much for Diego to handle. Andrey Rublev will get a strong win and point for Team Europe here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
