TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Vasek Pospisil faces Andy Murray in the Round of 16 on Wednesday September 22nd, 2021.
Veterans Vasek Pospisil and Andy Murray will do battle here at the 2021 Moselle Open for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Both men are highly experienced and will be eager to put on a good show here and going on a deep run here in Metz, France. Murray rolled back the years with a tremendous upset win over sixth seeded Ugo Humbert while Pospisil also defeated a Frenchman, Gregoire Barrere to reach this stage. They know each other’s game very well as they have played each other five times before in the past, and only time will tell who will get the win here. Who has what it takes to advance to the Quarter-Finals?
Vasek Pospisil is unseeded here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #66 on the ATP Tour. The Canadian has had a rough time over the past few seasons with injuries and loss of form, and has seen his ranking slide from the top 25 to its current #66 in just a few years. While he has not displayed his best tennis in quite some time, he is still a highly experienced player and is capable of some good tennis. His serve is a huge weapon, and his transition game which he honed on the doubles tour makes him a dangerous opponent on this quicker indoor surface. He wasn’t tested too much in his First Round win over Gregoire Barrere, serving very well and being consistently solid from the baseline. The former world number one Andy Murray will be a much tougher opponent, especially given his current form and Pospisil will have to be at his best here to get the win, but definitely shouldn’t be counted out.
Andy Murray is a former world number one and multiple Grand Slam winner that has had a terrible past few seasons with injuries, and at one point it was believed that his career was over. It is fantastic to see him back competing at a high level and while he is not the player that he one was, and possibly will never regain the speed and mobility that took him to the top, his fighting spirit is as high as ever and he has shown flashes of his quality. He lost a fantastic five setter to world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open which seemingly signaled that he was back, but he lost the next match he played to the unheralded Roman Saufilin in a French Challenger. He will be hoping to get his season back on track here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is seemingly on the right path, defeating highly rated hometown hero Ugo Humbert in three sets. Murray returned serve extremely well in that encounter, and was able to nullify the Frenchman’s aggressive groundstrokes with some ultra solid defence. Question marks remain about his fitness, and after that brutal three setter he may not have much left in the tank, but Murray is one of the sport’s most courageous fighters and he will surely dig deep here to get the win over Vasek Pospisil.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Andy Murray leading the head to head series 4-1. While the Brit has dominated the head to head they have not played since 2017, which is before he suffered his injuries. Interestingly, Vasek Pospisil won their last encounter, and he will take confidence in that plus the fact that he knows that Murray is not at his best. However, the Canadian has been in equally poor form, and I am expecting Andy Murray to pull off yet another impressive win here at the 2021 Moselle Open. Pospisil’s serve will be extremely tough to handle on this quick surface, but Murray is one of the game’s premier returners and I think he should be able to beak once or twice. It won’t be easy, but the Brit will grind out yet another win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here in Metz.
