TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Pablo Andujar in the Third Round on Friday September 3rd, 2021.
World number two Daniil Medvedev is one of the main contenders for the title here at the 2021 US Open and has been in sublime form recently. The big Russian has come close to winning the title here before and seems determined to capture the trophy this time around. Next up in his path is the veteran Spaniard Pablo Andujar who will be calling on all his experience to get him through this match. Can he do the unthinkable and cause the massive upset? Or will it be Medvedev getting the win as expected and coasting into the Round of 16?
Daniil Medvedev is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #2 on the ATP Tour. The Russian superstar has built some serious momentum heading into this event by winning the title at the Roger Cup and reached the Semis in Cincinnati. His all-court game is perfectly suited to the courts here in New York and he has simply been dominant so far, defeating Richard Gasquet and Dominik Koepfer in straight sets for the loss of only 15 games in total. In this type of fearsome form he is a very serious threat to Novak Djokovic’s chances of winning the title here and he appears locked and loaded here at the US Open. He is the massive favorite here against Pablo Andujar who is more of a clay court player and will be expecting yet another comprehensive win as he conserves even more energy ahead of his title fight.
Pablo Andujar is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #74 in the world. The Spanish veteran is more at home on the clay courts but has started strongly here so far, fighting from two sets to love down in the First Round against Mikhail Kukushkin and then cruising to a straight-sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber. He has a very solid baseline game with a big forehand, but will struggle to penetrate the defenses of his opponent Daniil Medvedev who is one of the best defensive players on the Tour. He will also struggle to keep up with the Russian from the baseline and seems set for a very tough day at the office. Andujar will be playing with nothing to lose here which can make him a dangerous opponent but the talent gap is likely too wide here.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and I am expecting a quick and comfortabe win for the world number two. Daniil Medvedev seems to be on another planet right now and seems like a lock for the Final at the moment. He has been dominating his opponents with some incredible tennis, and it is very unlikely that Pablo Andujar will be able to make a dent in his armor. To defeat the Russian you need to either overpower him or be more consistent than him, and the Spaniard can do neither of those things. This will be yet another clinical performance by Medvedev who will win easily here, advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open.
