TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Belinda Bencic takes on Jessica Pegula in the Round of 32 on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.
Will Belinda Bencic go through? Will Jessica Pegula pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most in-form players on the WTA tour with a tough test of her, let’s see if she can handle it. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open?
Belinda Bencic has been playing great tennis, winning the gold medal for Switzerland at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She has a tough match ahead of her, taking on crowd favorite Jessica Pegula, who has also been playing some solid tennis. I do think she’ll succeed though, and prevail to be the one to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open. Using her very versatile game to out-consist Jessica Pegula, she should get through with not too many setbacks. She’s been serving pretty well, and Pegula is not known for her returns, so I like her chances off that wing, let’s see if she can meet expectations and get the win.
Jessica Peluga has been playing solid tennis to set up this meeting against Belinda Bencic, it will no doubt be a very hard one. Bencic has been playing great tennis, and while I do foresee that she’ll push Bencic a little bit and cause a few problems here and there, she just isn’t playing well enough at the moment to take on the gold medalist. In order to win, she would have to play aggressive, but that would be hard as Bencic is a good defensive player and that’s not really Pegula’s style, so she’ll have to try and a different kind of aggression, and focus on creating some angles off the court and closing the net, vs. just powerful hitting and winners from the back of the court. While she has not too much of a chance, it could still be a good one to see who will move on to the fourth round at the 2021 US Open.
Belinda Bencic and Jessica Pegula have met twice before, with Belinca Bencic leading the head to head 2-0. The fact that Bencic has the number on her in their head to head isn’t a help for Pegula either, especially considering the fact that Bencic took her out in the Olympics this year where she won the whole thing as I’ve already covered. She won quite comfortably, and the conditions actually sort of resemble the ones in Tokyo, just on a much less extreme level. We could get a close one if Pegula really plays some mainline tennis, however, I doubt that that will be the case, and I expect we’ll be seeing Bencic continue here campaign here at the 2021 US Open with a pretty straightforward win.
