TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Denis Shapovalov takes on Roberto Carballes Baena in the Round of 64 on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021.
Will Roberto Carballes Baena get another big win under his belt as he aims to get further than anyone expected here at the 2021 US Open? Will Denis Shapovalov get revenge for that heartbreaking loss to Roberto at the 2020 French Open? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Roberto Carballes Baena put on a solid performance in his first match, beating the favourite Tommy Paul in 4 sets 7-6/6-2/1-6/6-3. This match was extremely tight, with both players having chances to get ahead. However, the slight experience of the Spaniard allowed him to maintain his composure during the tight moments and eventually come through as the winner. Roberto only won 1 more point than Tommy during the match, but its not how many points you win, its about what points you win. Roberto Carballes Baena will be happy with this performance but he will now know she is going to meet Denis Shapovalov here at the 2021 US Open who will be determined to get revenge for their prior meeting at a Grand Slam.
Denis Shapovalov cruised through his opening match against the always tough Federido Delbonis, beating the Argentine in straight sets 6-2/6-2/6-3. Shapovalov was superb on his first serve, winning 90% of points when it went in. On his second serve, he was average, winning 57% of points and hitting 6 double faults. Shapovalov was still able to not give Delbonis a single break points throughout the entire match and this is a big positive to take away. Shapovalov will want to ensure he does the same now that he meets someone who broke him many times in their last meeting, Roberto Carballes Baena.
Denis Shapovalov and Roberto Carballes Baena have met 1 time before, with Roberto Carballes Baena leading the head to head 1-0. They met at the 2020 French Open where they played an incredible 5-set thriller. Denis was supposed to win the match, having multiple opportunities to serve it out in the 5th set. However, he kept double faulting and Roberto put on a great fight to get back in the set, eventually winning it 8-6 in the 5th. This match was very tough on Denis mentally, and if he wants to give himself a big boost, getting revenge here at the 2021 US Open would be a good start. I do expect a tight match because of what Roberto showed in his opening match, but because we are on hard, the conditions favour the Canadian more this time, and he will get himself into the Round of 32 of the 2021 US Open.
