Will Aslan Karatsev continue to build momentum and try and regain the form which he had in the hard court season at the start of 2021? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Jordan Thompson had to fight through an extremely tight opening round match against the experienced Italian, Gianluca Mager, beating him in 5 sets 4-6/6-3/7-5/2-6/7-6. Although Thompson had some great serving numbers, winning 70% of first serves and 83% of second serves, he was also losing the wrong points. Jordan is an underrated player, having shown some great tennis at times in the last few years. However, nothing stands out in the Aussies game that makes you believe that he will be able to get a good win here at the 2021 US Open against the likes of Aslan Karatsev.
Aslan Karatsev found his rhythm in his first match here after a few sets, beating the Spaniard, Jaume Munar, in 4 sets 7-5/1-6/6-3/6-3. Aslan knows that he was able to get his range going after he lost the second set, but he will be still disappointed in the fact he hit 9 double faults throughout the match. Aslan has a great game in these conditions, as he showed us from the start of the year until about April. However, he needs to find this form again if he wants to continue rising up the rankings and getting himself in the mix for big titles on the ATP Tour continuously. Can he cruise through Jordan Thompson here at the 2021 US Open?
Aslan Karatsev and Jordan Thompson have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Jordan Thompson is slightly more experienced on the ATP Tour even if they are both 27 years old. However, Karatsev has achieved more in his breakthrough year this year than what Jordan has done in the last 8 years. Aslan will know that he needs to get some easy wins under his belt, and I believe that if Jordan Thompson struggled against a slow clay court player like Gianluca Mager, he will have a very tough time against the power and speed of Aslan Karatsev’s game here at the 2021 US Open.
