TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Roberto Bautista Agut (18) faces Nick Kyrgios in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
What a match is in store for us here at the 2021 US Open as Roberto Bautista Agut meets Nick Kyrgios in the First Round. This match is one that we would expect to happen in the later rounds and it really is a shame that the two stars have to play each other so early on. Nick Kyrgios is “must see TV” every time that he steps onto the court, and RBA is one of the most reliable and steady performers on the ATP Tour. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round here in New York?
Roberto Bautista Agut is the eighteenth seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #21 on the ATP Tour. The veteran Spaniard is a fearsome competitor and has built a reputation of being one of the most mentally strong and most consistent performers on the Tour. He has been uncharacteristically inconsistent since Wimbledon, losing in the First Round of three of his past four tournaments, with only a Quarter-Final showing at the Rogers Cup being a performance of note. RBA will be hoping for a strong showing here in New York to get his season back on track, however he has been handed a very difficult draw, having to play Aussie star Nick Kyrgios in the First Round. While Bautista Agut is still considered the favorite, he knows that he will have his work cut out for him here and is set for a huge battle.
Nick Kyrgios is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked at a lowly #85 in the ATP world rankings. His ranking has plummeted due to him not playing many events since the start of the pandemic, but he remains an extremely dangerous player and one that all the top players will have been hoping to avoid. Roberto Bautista Agut was given the misfortune of having to play Kyrgios in the First Round, and all signs are pointing toward it being a real classic. Kyrgios is the underdog here due to his lower ranking and his lack of match practice, but he is so talented that anything can happen. He is capable of beating anyone in the world on a good day and if he plays to the best of his abilities he can certainly cause the upset here.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head deadlocked at 1-1. This is an incredibly hard match to predict, as is usually the case any time Nick Kyrgios is involved. The Aussie has hardly played any tennis over the past two seasons but he is notoriously difficult to trust, as he is just as likely to defeat Novak Djokovic as he is to lose to a Qualifier. Roberto Bautista Agut is the safe pick as he is extremely reliable but I am going to back the Australian here. He always saves his best tennis for the big stage and this is one of the biggest. I do think that it will be extremely close and could potentially go the distance, but if his injury is no longer bothering him I think Kyrgios will have just enough quality to cause the upset here, advancing to the Second Round at the 2021 US Open.
