TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Diego Schwartzman (11) meets Ricardas Berankis in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
Can Ricardas Berankis pull off the upset in what would be one of the biggest wins of his long career? Or will it be the fan favorite Diego Schwartzman advancing as expected? Both men have been quite inconsistent lately and will be hoping to get off to a good start here at the 2021 US Open. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round?
Diego Schwartzman is the eleventh seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #14 on the ATP Tour. The Argentina is a big crowd favorite wherever he goes and is one of the most popular players on the Tour. He is also one of the most consistent and hardest working, and will be eager to get his US Open campaign off to a solid start here. He has had mixed results so far since arriving in North America and will surely be expecting to get the win here over Ricardas Berankis. While he is the favorite here he is far from a sure winner due to his inconsistency and the fact that this is not his favored surface. If he can hold serve consistently then he should be able to get the victory, but that is something that he struggles with on this surface.
Ricardas Berankis is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #96 in the world. The Lithuanian has spent most of his career hovering around the #100 mark in the rankings, and spends his time between the ATP and Challenger Tour. Despite his inconsistent season in 2021, the US Open has been his most successful Grand Slam in his career to date, with a total of six wins. He will be up against it here against world number 14 Diego Schwartzman, a two time Quarter-Finalist. While this looks like a mismatch on paper, Berankis will be well aware of his opponent’s indifferent form of late and will be hoping to take advantage. Unfortunately, he does not possess the weapons that are needed to hit through the Argentina and is seemingly in for a very tough day at the office.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and I think it will be a relatively short one, and will result in a straight-sets win for Diego Schwartzman. He has not been playing well lately but this is exactly the type of match that he needs to kick-start his season and I expect him to be ready to pounce here. Ricardas Berankis is no slouch and has put together a solid career, but he simply is not match for the #11 seed and I expect him to go down without too many issues. Diego Schwartzman will win comfortably here in straight sets, advancing to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open.
