TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Mikael Ymer in the Semi-Finals on Friday, August 27th, 2021.
Will Carlos Alcaraz move on? Will Mikael Ymer pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two talented next-gen players fighting for a spot in the final on the ATP Tour. Who will move on to the Final at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Carlos Alcaraz played a solid match, once again putting his power and consistency on display. He was able to follow a very clear-cut gameplan, hitting hard and playing aggressive off every wing. One thing he could have done better which he will probably need to do better in order to see of Mikael Ymer without too much trouble is make more first serves. Alcaraz seems to hit quite a few second serves, today he served at only 53%, while the number could have been worse, it’s not a particularly high number, especially for someone who is not an enormous server. On the one hand, he does back up his second serve quite well, not dropping down below 70% on second serve points won in his matches this tournament, even still, Ymer is returning quite well, so he’ll need to make sure he doesn’t allow him to play too aggressive and take advantage of any opportunities he gets in that way here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Mikael Ymer played a great match, upsetting Frances Tiafoe in 3 sets after dropping the first 6-7. After that, it was smooth sailing for Ymer who crushed him in the next two sets 6-2 6-3. He took advantage of many opportunities tonight, converting on 7/14 break point opportunities. However, he was broken 3 times himself and won only about half of his second serve points. He did get through the match which is the important thing, but that does not mean he will be able to beat Carlos Alcaraz without raising his level, especially on serve. I think he’ll need to try and play aggressive, and not get into too many longer rallies against him as I do think in most cases Alcaraz will be able to take advantage of any opportunities he sees first. I do think he can do it, especially if he serves well, but it’s a very tough task either way and we very well might be seeing Carlos Alcaraz make his second final on the ATP Tour at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Carlos Alcaraz and Mikael Ymer have met once before, with Mikael Ymer leading the head to head 1-0. Their only meeting was this year at the Australian Open, with Ymer winning in four sets. While this was a while ago in terms of how much Alcaraz has improved, it definitely shows that Ymer knows how to play him and absolutely has a shot. Despite that, Alcaraz is playing super well, and I think as long as he makes a lot of first serves he’ll be looking pretty good to take this one without too much resistance. I suspect that any rallies they’ll get into, Alcaraz will be able to keep it deeper for longer and take advantage of a lot of short balls as a result using his incredible power to put balls away, allowing him to move on to the Final at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
