TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Dan Evans takes on Richard Gasquet in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021.
Will Dan Evans prevail? Will Richard Gasquet pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have a younger and higher ranked player taking on a veteran of the ATP Tour with incredible longevity who has been known to accomplish some spectacular things. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Dan Evans came through after losing the first set in his first match, taking the next two in a dominant display. It was some solid play from Evans, particularly on serve where he was able to put in a lot of serves and win quite a lot of those points, utilizing his forehand very well and slicing his way out of trouble. He has an interesting match coming up with Richard Gasquet, it will be interesting to see how he plays him, as Gasquet is a guy with a lot of experience, who will be harder to fool with his masterful slice, he can definitely adjust to those shots and will try to play around it. However, Gasquet is nowhere near what he used to be, and I foresee that Evans won’t have much trouble with him. Being able to hold serve efficiently and blocking or attacking almost any serve that comes his way. He should get a pretty nice and straightforward win heading into the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Richard Gasquet came through in a very tight match needing two tiebreakers to set up this meeting with Dan Evans. It will be a very hard one for him, as in addition to being so far out of his prime, he was never the best returner anyway, so he’ll have to try and hope to get a lot of serves back in the court, where he’ll then be able to hit some heavier balls to Evans’ backpack to make the slice less effective to where he can then attack many short responses he would get. This is of course, much harder to do than it may seem on paper though, Evans has a powerful serve and forehand, so Gasquet will want to take the ball quite early, especially with his one handed backhand, sometimes attempting to utilize his slice himself to throw Evans off. It will be a very tough match, just considering recent form and the conditions, but let’s see what Gasquet can do and see if he can push Dan Evans for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Dan Evans and Richard Gasquet have met once before, with Richard Gasquet leading the head to head 1-0. Funny enough, their only meeting was at this very tournament at the 2016 edition of it five years ago. The match did go 3 sets, and this is at a time when Gasquet was still playing relatively well and at a pretty good spot in the ranking, still being able to stay generally consistent. If he lost a set then, it will be hard not to lose two sets against Evans now given current conditions. I expect Dan to get a lot of unforced errors of Richard being able to cut the angles off with sharp slices and being able to grind it out more with his forehand, he definitely won’t want to get into backhand to backhand exchanges against Gasquet, although those are most unlikely to happen, whereas more forehand action is likely where the points will mostly go in favor of Dan Evans, overall, I do expect Evans to get a nice and comfortable win and build some confidence to progress to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
