TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021.
Will Carlos Alcaraz pull off the upset? Will Marton Fucsovics meet expectations? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the newest next-gen players taking on one of the older top guys who’s been having a great year. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Carlos Alcaraz played a great match against fellow next-gen player Alexei Popyrin, winning in three sets 6-7 (11) 6-1 7-6 (1). It was a great turn around, showing extreme mental stability, losing such a close set to come back and earn a breadstick set, then being able to follow it up with what was nearly a whitewash tiebreak against such a strong server. It will most certainly not be an easy one against Marton Fucsovics though, with two very well rounded players, who both rely on having consistent and versatile groundstrokes, while having underrated serves and solid returns. They are rather similar in the way that they play, however, looking at the stats from their first matches, Alcaraz put on an excellent display on serve, winning 90% of his points on second serve. Those are some great numbers, and with such powerful but consistent groundstrokes, I really like his chance to upset Marton and book himself a spot in the quarterfinal of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Marton Fucsovics got a pretty easy win in his first match, while the scoreline definitely appeared as if he played great, it was more so that his opponent didn’t have the means or the current form to take on Fucsovics. Marton didn’t serve great, and he didn’t convert on very many break points against a pretty unknown player, these are not great signs coming into the match vs. Carlos Alcaraz. While he is the higher ranked, more experienced player and has plenty of results this year to back up the fact that he is better at the moment, that doesn’t mean he’ll win this match. Alcaraz is serving exceptionally well and showing some incredible mental resolve, it will be hard for Fucsovics to break him, and it will be harder than normal to hold if he serves like that again, as the favorite to win this match, he should absolutely feel some confidence going into this match, however, I would expect him to be upset this time around as he fights for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Marton Fucsovics and Carlos Alcaraz have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a pretty cool match-up, as both players have a relatively similar style, just different ways of executing it. Carlos likes to play a little bit more like he’s on a clay court, while Marton likes to play a little bit more like he’s on a grass court. Alcaraz has incredible power off both wings, and I most definitely expect him to utilize all of it in this match. I expect him to serve very well, and be able to place his shots accurately and measure them very well to get Fucsovics on the run and win many points that way. I also expect him to try and play aggressive on the many second serves I expect him to get the chance to take some cracks at. I definitely foresee there being some back and forth points in the match, however I do expect Carlos Alcaraz to be able to pull off the upset and progress to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
