TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Hubert Hurkacz takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 17th, 2021.
Will Hubert Hurkacz maintain his form? Will Alejandro Davidovich Fokina pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most in-form players on the ATP tour going head to head with one of the young guns who has already shown the potential he has. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
Hubert Hurkacz has been playing some serious tennis, hitting really clean and powerful, with plenty of consistency, being able to spread the ball around the court beautifully, mixed in with some incredible service, returning, as well as an amazing net game. He’s a very versatile player, and he showed that in his most recent match against Daniil Medvedev, while he did lose a very tight match, he played a great match, having been told by Daniil himself that he was the better player. That’s why when he comes up against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, I don’t expect too much trouble, considering the way he is playing at the moment, and considering how his opponent has been playing, he should do very well. The game plan against Davidovich Fokina will remain pretty simple, and that’s hit some aggressive, consistent balls, not necessarily trying to finish everything. If he does this effectively, he should get many unforced errors from Alejandro in return, as well as opportunities to close the point out. I expect a pretty nice and easy win for Hubert here to kick off his campaign at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has had a breakthrough year himself, reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open this year. It’ll be a very hard match against Hubert Hurkacz, who plays somewhat like himself, just at a higher and more aggressive level, which definitely isn’t good news for Fokina. In my mind, he’ll have to play some really aggressive, lights-out tennis, which is a style that he isn’t necessarily used to. However, it’ll just be too hard to try and grind with Hurkacz at the baseline, who isn’t just a hard-hitting aggressive player, but also hits the ball so consistently, which makes it even harder to figure out a way to win against him. His serving must also be on point, as he likely won’t get many opportunities to break the Hurkacz serve, he’ll need to make sure he takes care of his own. This means going for many one-twos after punching a serve into the corner, if he can do this effectively, I like his chances tomorrow to be competitive for a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Hubert Hurkacz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have met twice before, with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina leading the head to head 2-0. This shows that Alejandro knows how to play him, he has a chance tomorrow to take him out, but it doesn’t change the fact that Hurkacz is in some serious form and these previous results aren’t too important, while the current form which definitely favors Hubert, as Alejandro himself has not been doing very well recently, it’s just hard not to back Hurkacz despite this head to head advantage for Davidovich Fokina. Alejandro will have to find ways to be aggressive and put him away and hope that Hurkacz isn’t playing as well as he has been as of late. For Hurkacz, I expect him to get a nice easy win under his belt, with some consistent and aggressive play to kick off his campaign here with a good win at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
