TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Kevin Anderson in the Round of 64 on Monday, August 16th, 2021.
Will Kevin Anderson use the momentum he gained in the qualifying rounds here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open to put on a solid performance in the main draw? Will Karen Khachanov continue to put on solid performances and bounce back from a tough loss last week in Toronto? Both players are very solid on their serve and forehand, and both can win if they are at their best, but only one will make their way through to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Who will it be?
Kevin Anderson has been in solid form this North American hard court swing, winning the Hall of Fame Open, however, since then he has gone 0-2 in the main draws of tournaments. Kevin had to come through qualifying here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open, and he did not lose a set, beating Lorenzo Musetti and Steve Johnson to get himself into the main draw. The conditions here suit Anderson heavily because his serve will just fly through the court, but he needs to ensure he gets a high percentage of first serves in, because his second serve comes in slower and can be returned by good returners, like Karen Khachanov.
Karen Khachanov will be looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas last week at the Toronto Open where he just did not look as good as he had been in the entire month of July. Karen looked a bit tired mentally from his success and perhaps the loss was good because it gave him a few days off before coming to the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Karen, when at his best, has a huge kick serve and his forehand is so hard to return, but his game is definitely based on confidence and he will need to get started off strongly against Kevin Anderson here if he wants to build that confidence up.
Karen Khachanov and Kevin Anderson have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They met in similar conditions in Melbourne earlier this year, where Karen won in straight sets. Since then, both players have improved and gotten good results under their belt, but one player has been much more successful this year, Karen Khachanov. Karen has been able to beat big name opponents this year, especially over the last month, and one loss will not change his game and success. I do expect a tight match just because Kevin has gotten some matches under his belt in these 2021 Cincinnati Open conditions, but Karen will move the big South African around the court and tire him out to get himself in the Round of 32.
