TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets James Duckworth in the Round of 16 on Thursday August 12th, 2021.
Top seeded Daniil Medvedev is the favorite to lift the trophy here at the 2021 Toronto Open with the withdrawals of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. He will now face the Aussie James Duckworth in the Round of 16 for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the Rogers Cup. The Russian world number #2 is the big favorite here, but Duckworth will have his eyes firmly fixed on claiming yet another upset here in Toronto. Can he do the unthinkable and reach his first ever Masters-1000 Quarter-Final?
Daniil Medvedev is the number one seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings. The big Russian has firmly established himself as one of the best players in the world over the past two seasons and along with Stefanos Tsitsipas is a big favorite to win the title here. Medvedev was made to work in his Second Round win over Alexander Bublik, surviving in three sets, knowing he will have to improve if he is to win his third title of the season. Luckily for him, he will face James Duckworth and not Jannik Sinner, so it is likely to be an opportunity for him to play himself back into form without too many worries. While he is the massive favorite here, the Russian should not underestimate his opponent who has shown that he is very capable of causing upsets when the opportunity presents itself.
James Duckworth is unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open, and is ranked #85 on the ATP Tour. The Australian Qualifier has had a rough time over the past few seasons with multiple surgeries, but is seemingly back to full fitness and playing some strong tennis. He shocked the tennis world by defeating the Washington Open champ Jannik Sinner in the Second Round, for the best win of his career. After defeating Taylor Fritz in the First Round he will be full of confidence now and can play freely without pressure. However, he is the big underdog here against world number two Daniil Medvedev, and while he is playing very well it would take the best tennis of his life to make this match remotely competitive.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very comfortable win for the big Russian Daniil Medvedev. Simply put, he is much too good for his opponent James Duckworth to have a chance here, and I see him winning comfortably in straight sets. The Aussie lacks the firepower to be able to compete with Medvedev, so his tremendous run here at the 2021 Toronto Open is likely going to be over very quickly. Expect Medvedev to cruise to victory here, booking his spot in the Quarter-Finals of the Rogers Cup.
