TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Daniil Medvedev takes on Ugo Humbert on Day 2 on Sunday, January 2nd, 2021.
Will Ugo Humbert have enough in him to get a huge upset win for Team France and shock everyone? Will Daniil Medvedev continue to dominate as he aims to get his 2022 season off to a strong start? Both players will want to give it their all, but who will get a point for their respective team at the 2022 ATP Cup?
Ugo Humbert has been showing some great potential throughout his young career on the ATP Tour, with the Frenchman having won 3 career titles and having beaten the likes of Andrey Rublev in one of those finals. However, in the second half of the 2021 season, Ugo had some injury issues which saw him only play a couple matches after the US Open. Ugo Humbert has the potential to be a top 20 and maybe even top 15 player when he is fully fit as he has a great all round game, and he is a lefty. However, with this being his first ATP Tour tournament in nearly 5 months, how much rust will we see from him as he now meets Daniil Medvedev at the 2022 ATP Cup?
Daniil Medvedev has been in superb form throughout the entire 2021 season, getting into the late stages of most tournaments he played in, preventing Novak Djokovic from completing the Calendar Slam, and getting himself very close to the World No.1 spot. Daniil won the ATP Cup for Russia last year here in Australia and just a month ago he won the Davis Cup for Russia as well. Daniil Medvedev has a lot of goals for 2022, as he stated many times, and he wants to become the World No.1. In these hot hard court conditions, Medvedev is very tough to beat as he is able to wear down opponents through long and tough rallies. Can the Russian get off to a positive start against Ugo Humbert?
Daniil Medvedev and Ugo Humbert have met 1 time before, with Ugo Humbert leading the head to head 1-0. Although Ugo is a great player, has a lot of potential, and has beaten Medvedev before, he is nowhere near the level of Medvedev over the last year. Ugo was not really preparing for this tournament as Team France entered only 2 days ago after Team Austria withdrew, whilst Medvedev has been preparing for a while now. They are in two completely different leagues, and unfortunately for Ugo Humbert there is no more experienced Frenchman here at the 2022 ATP Cup. Expect for a dominant performance by Medvedev as he aims to continue his form and gain even more momentum before the Australian Open.
