TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Andrey Rublev (4) meets Fabio Fognini in the Second Round on Wednesday August 11th, 2021.
A high-quality match is expected as fourth seeded Russian Andrey Rublev takes on Fabio Fognini of Italy for a spot in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Rublev has been one of the standout players over the past few seasons while Fognini is a veteran that has been on the decline lately. It seems a bit one sided on paper but you can never truly count the Italian out due to his immense talent and experience. Can he find it within him to cause the big upset?
Andrey Rublev is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is ranked #7 on the ATP Tour. The Russian has dominated the ATP-250 and 500 circuit over the past few seasons and is now beginning to make his mark on the larger events. With his ultra-aggressive game style he has the ability to dominate most players from the baseline, and it is very rare that he loses to those ranked below him. He enters this event after a disappointing Olympics, where he lost in the First Round to Kei Nishikori, although he somewhat made amends by winning the Mixed Doubles gold medal. Rublev is the massive favorite here against Fabio Fognini but his confidence will have taken a hit after the Olympics and his opponent is very unpredictable, so anything can happen.
Fabio Fognini is unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is currently ranked #36 on the ATP Tour. The Italian had been a staple in the top 10 for many years but has seen his ranking slowly decline over the past few seasons. Still capable of some world class tennis, those performances are becoming less and less frequent as he approaches the end of a glittering career. All that being said, he is still one of the best players in the world on a good day, and should not be underestimated here by his opponent Andrey Rublev. If Fognini decides to fully focus and Rublev has an off day, there is certainly an outside chance of an upset here. Fognini was outstanding in his First Round win over Jan-Lennard Struff, battling back from a set down to get the win. He is the underdog here, but it is never easy to predict what he will do next.
This will be the ninth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the Italian Fabio Fognini leading the head to head 5-3. Despite this, Andrey Rublev won their last two meetings and has been the much better and more consistent player over the past three years. Fognini is still capable of some good tennis, but all signs are pointing towards the Russian rolling to victory here. He is not as prone to meltdowns or loss of focus as his Italian opponent, and I am expecting a comfortable straight sets win for Rublev. He will win here, advancing to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Toronto Open.
