TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Reilly Opelka (8) takes on John Millman (11) in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 5th, 2021.
Will John Millman get a big win under his belt after having come through an entertaining first match against Elias Ymer? Will Reilly Opelka come out here and impress the American crowd with his huge serve and powerful forehand as he continues to find success on hard courts this year? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
John Millman came through an entertaining encounter against Elias Ymer, beating the qualifier in straight sets 6-2/7-6. The second set was so tight and John had to use all of his experience to get himself through that set and ensure that a comeback was not on the cards if the match went to 3 sets. John is an underrated player when he is on top of his game, but it has been a while since he has been at his best. John will know he has a very tough opponent now as he meets Reilly Opelka, and he will have to be at his absolute best if he is to cause the upset here at the 2021 Washington Open.
Reilly Opelka put on a solid performance against the in form Daniel Elahi Galan, beating the Colombian in straight sets 7-6/6-3. The first set was extremely tight, but in the tiebreak, Opelka did what he does best, serve aces left, right, and center. Once he had that first set under his belt, Galan did not look mentally ready to put on a comeback win as this would most likely have to come through two more tiebreak sets. Galan let his guard down and Opelka dominated the second set. Now in the Round of 16, Opelka will aim to serve his way through a match again now that he meets a more experienced opponent in John Millman at the 2021 Washington Open.
Reilly Opelka and John Millman have met 2 times before, with John Millman leading the head to head 2-0. They met earlier this year on grass where John came through an extremely tight 3 set match which had 2 tiebreaks in it. That match was on grass and with the conditions being slower, Millman was able to return a lot of balls. However, here on the hard courts in the US, Opelka loves the conditions as the ball goes through the court at much higher speeds. Opelka has been great on serve over the last week, winning doubles in Atlanta along the way, and he will get revenge for that loss in Queen’s Club a couple months ago as he makes his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
