TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Yoshihito Nishioka takes on Jack Sock in the Round of 64 on Monday, August 2nd, 2021.
Will Jack Sock manage to pull off the upset and move on? Will Yoshihito get back into winning form with a nice win here? Monday’s match will make for an interesting one, as we have Jack Sock back on the tour, he’ll be the crowd favorite and it’ll most certainly be interesting to see if he can handle Yoshihito. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Washington Open?
Yoshihito Nishioka has not had amazing results as of late, even against Jack Sock, having suffered a pretty bad loss to him a couple of weeks ago. His confidence levels certainly won’t be soaring, however, this was on grass, and now they’re playing on a hard court. Nishioka even managed to take a set off of Karen Khachanov in the first round of the Olympics just a week ago, and Khachanov achieved Silver in Tokyo. We know he can pull out a great level, however, Sock does have a pretty good game to counter Nishioka’s type of style of play. So it will most certainly be a tough one for him even if he’s the heavy favorite by ranking here at the 2021 Washington Open.
Jack Sock, despite not being the favorite on paper, may definitely be the man to pick here to cause the upset. Sock has had pretty decent results in the last few weeks, having just returned to the ATP Tour in singles after a long hiatus. He can most certainly do some pretty good things, not just in this tournament but throughout the hardcourt swing where he will be one of the crowd favorites. He has the game to upset Nishioka, and I think he may do it, he has the power game and the big serve, which will most certainly be a tough one for his opponent to deal with, especially if he’s going to be going for his shots and trying to be real aggressive. He has a great shot here to move on to the next round.
Jack Sock and Yoshihito Nishioka have met 3 times before, with Jack Sock leading the head to head 2-1. The first two meetings don’t matter much, both having been strange circumstances as well as them both being 4 years ago. So we will only look at their most recent meeting, which was very recent. Both players should know what they have to do against each other, it’s just going to be a question of if they can do it, and I think Jack Sock will be able to more easily execute his gameplan, but still, he is not the favorite on paper for a reason and Nishioka absolutely has a great chance on the hard courts of D.C. Let’s see who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Washington Open.
