TennisSection previews the 2021 Atlanta Open as Jannik Sinner (2) meets Christopher O’Connell in the Round of 16 on Thurday July 29th, 2021.
Young Italian sensation Jannik Sinner makes his return to the ATP Tour after a very disappointing grass-court swing where he failed to win a match. He is one of the best young players in the world and will be aiming to bounce back with a strong showing this week at the 2021 Atlanta Open. First up he will face the Australian Qualifier Christopher O’Connell who has played well so far this week. Can the Aussie cause the massive upset here? Or will Sinner get the win as expected on his favored hard courts?
Jannik Sinner is the second seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #23 on the ATP Tour. The young Italian has turned heads over the past two seasons and has firmly established himself among the best players in the world with some fantastic displays. After breaking out at the Miami Open where he reached his first Masters-1000 Final, he has been relatively disappointing since and will be aiming to get his season back on track here. The Italian has a complete all-around game, and has all the qualities needed to be a top 5 player. It is only a matter of time before he starts winning some major titles but he first needs to get some more consistency in his results. Some rust is to be expected here but he still starts as the overwhelming favorite over Christopher O’Connell.
Christopher O’Connell is currently ranked #137 on the ATP Tour and entered the 2021 Atlanta Open as a Qualifier. After coming through the qualis without dropping a set, he defeated Denis Kudla without dropping a set and is playing well at the moment. While he is a solid player he has no real weapons that can trouble his Italian opponent Jannik Sinner, and he will have to reply on him making a lot of errors to have any chance here. O’Connell is the big underdog here but Sinner has not played in a few weeks, so he will feel that he has a small opportunity here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a comfortable win for Jannik Sinner here. The Italian is clearly a superstar in the making, and his opponent Christopher O’Connell is no match for his powerful and aggressive game. He may start slowly as he gets accustomed to the courts, but I expect him to figure it out very quickly and should dominate the match from the baseline. Sinner is one of the main contenders for the title here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and he will win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Atlanta Open.
