TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova takes on Belinda Bencic in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.
Will Belinda Bencic continue to improve her game as she aims to get back to her best and go even further than her peak? Will Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova continue to cruise here in Tokyo as she aims to use the momentum gained on the WTA Tour over the last 2 months to go far? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Belinda Bencic put on a great comeback fight against the in form Barbora Krejcikova, coming back from a set down to win in 3 sets 1-6/6-2/6-3. Belinda Bencic looked out of it in the first set, but she completely changed that in the second set and then carried that momentum into the third set. This form is very good for Belinda as she will be able to use this as a strong base to go into the US hard court season next month. However, Belinda will need to have all of her focus on this big task at hand in Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova cruised through her third round match, beating the in form Spaniard, Sara Sorribes Tormo, in straight sets 6-1/6-3. Anastasia has been in great form this year, turning herself from someone who reaches the third or fourth round of grand slams and then loses, to someone who can actually make it all the way to the final. Anastasia knows that looking at the remaining players in the draw, she definitely has the chance of winning a title here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but to do so and give herself a shot at a medal, she needs to beat Belinda Bencic.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Belinda Bencic have met 6 times before, with Belinda Bencic leading the head to head 4-2. They have always played tight matches against each other and I expect no different here. Anastasia has been in great form in June, reaching the Final of the French Open, but she has not impressed as much since then. Belinda has been in great form here in Tokyo and she just beat Krejcikova who had beaten Pavlyuchenkova easily in Paris. I expect both players to have some strong momentum going into this match, but Belinda Bencic is on a redemption path and she will use this momentum to get herself into the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
