TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Daniil Medvedev takes on Fabio Fognini in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.
Will Fabio Fognini get one of the biggest wins of his career since 2019 as he has not really been at his best over the last 2 years? will Daniil Medvedev continue to cruise through opponents here in Tokyo as he aims to get himself into the Quarter-Finals. Both players are very experienced and can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Fabio Fognini came through a tight straight set win over Egor Gerasimov, beating him 6-4/7-6. Fabio was able to use his experience and he did not try and act as if he could win easily. This allowed Fabio to maintain his composure during the tight moments and he was very good at moving Egor around the court. Fabio is representing his country so he will want to play at his best because he does not want to let his fans down. However, he now meets the very in form Daniil Medvedev who will give him a very tough time.
Daniil Medvedev cruised through his second round match, beating Sumit Nagal in straight sets 6-2/6-1. It is always great to watch Daniil Medvedev play on hard courts because his game is so well suited to these conditions, with the Russian having a huge serve, and one of the best backhands in the game, allowing him to hurt opponents off of both wings. Daniil Medvedev knows he should be either winning Gold here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, or at least silver, so he will not let Fabio Fognini get anything easily out of this Round of 16 match.
Daniil Medvedev and Fabio Fognini have met 4 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 3-1. They have always met on hard courts, and Medvedev has won their last 3 encounters. Their meetings have always been tight and entertaining, with half of them going to 3 sets. However, looking at how locked in Daniil Medvedev is here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, I see him dominating this match from start to finish. Fabio did not dominate against a much lower ranked opponent in Egor Gerasimov, so we cannot expect him to cause much trouble against the World No.2 and one of the best hard court players out there. Medvedev will win and make his way to the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
