Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Aryna Sabalenka vs. Magda Linette Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Aryna Sabalenka (3) meets Magda Linette in the First Round on Sunday, July 25th, 2021.

Third seeded Aryna Sabalenka will seek to put her Wimbledon heartbreak behind her with a strong showing here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Belarusian has had an outstanding season so far in 2021, and stands a good chance of medaling here in Tokyo. First up for her is Magda Linette of Poland. Linette has also been in good form recently, can she cause the massive upset and advance here?

Aryna Sabalenka is the third seed here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is ranked #3 on the WTA Tour. She has had a fantastic season so far, and has been dominant over the past two seasons. She had previously failed to truly break out at a big event until Wimbledon a few weeks ago, but that changed as she reached the Semi-Finals, losing a heartbreaker to Karolina Pliskova. While she would have been disappointed with that result, she took a lot of confidence, and should now truly believe that she is a true contender at any event that she may enter. She enters this match against Magda Linette as the big favorite, and will be backing herself to advance comfortably here.

Magda Linette is unseeded here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and is currently ranked #45 on the WTA Tour. Like her opponent Aryna Sabalenka, she has been in good form lately, reaching the Round of 16 at Wimbledon with a big win over Elina Svitolina. While she is not a big name, she has two hard court titles and is not an opponent to underestimate. She enters this match against Aryna Sabalenka as the big underdog, but her steady groundstrokes and strong tactical play make her a very tricky opponent.

This will be the second time that the two players have met on the WTA Tour, with Aryna Sabalenka leading the head to head 1-0. They met in Tianjin three years ago, resulting in a comprehensive win for the Belarusian. I am expecting a very similar result here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with Sabalenka truly breaking out and establishing herself as an elite player on the WTA Tour. Magda is no slouch, but she doesn’t have the firepower to compete with Sabalenka, who will win and advance to the Second Round here in Tokyo.
