TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Andrey Rublev takes on Kei Nishikori in the Round of 64 on Sunday, July 25th, 2021.
Will Kei Nishikori pull off the upset at home? Will Andrey Rublev make a strong showing to kick off his campaign? Saturday’s contest will be one to watch, where we have the best first round match up out of any of them. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?
Andrey Rublev has had a tough time lately on the ATP Tour, after being one of its most dominant players for a while. Now that we’re back to hard courts, though, Rublev should be confident as he’s one of the best hard court players in the world and if he’s able to take care of the crowd favorite with ease, he should be super confident. His opponent has been playing well again despite his ranking, and should not be taken lightly at all, Rublev will have to play that all-out, hard hitting style of tennis that we know he has, using one of the best forehands in the world to dictate play.
Kei Nishikori is one of the most consistent ball strikers on tour, and after having some bad injuries which put him off for a while, he’s back playing at a good level again, despite his ranking at the lower end of the top 100, he’s been doing well, and is struggling to be able to get past the top players, much like Alexander Zverev, although he does it at a higher level. If Nishikori is on though, he can pull off the upset, especially considering Andrey is not in top form right now. He really has a shot at this match with his home crowd behind him.
Andrey Rublev and Kei Nishikori have met once before, with Kei Nishikori leading the head to head 1-0. He leads the head to head over the current superior player, however, got this win over Rublev when he wasn’t very known yet and wasn’t the force on the tour that he is now. I expect a good match, perhaps it won’t be that close, depending on the level Rublev is at, however, the quality of ball striking from both sides will be unrivaled in the first round stage at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
