Gstaad Open 2021: Laslo Djere vs. Hugo Gaston Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Gstaad Open as Laslo Djere (7) meets Hugo Gaston in the Semi-Finals on Saturday July 24th, 2021.

A very surprising Semi-Final awaits us at the 2021 Gstaad Open as seventh seeded Laslo Djere faces Hugo Gaston for a spot in Sunday’s Final. Hugo Gaston in particular was not expected to make it this far but has played some brilliant tennis this week, and fully deserves his place in the Semis. Can he take it one step further by causing yet another upset, and advancing to his first ever ATP Final?

Laslo Djere is the seventh seed here at the 2021 Gstaad Open, and is currently ranked #52 on the ATP Tour. The Serbian is a very experienced player on Tour and has two titles to his name. After reaching the Semi-Finals last week in Hamburg he has carried that momentum into this event and has reached the Semis yet again. After cruising past Thiago Wild in the First Round he won back to back three set battles over Zizou Bergs and Arthur Rinderknech, showing a maturity that he does not often display, tending to fall apart in tight situations. In this type of form he has to be considered the favorite here over Hugo Gaston but will be wary of the Frenchman’s giant-killing exploits.

Hugo Gaston is ranked #155 on the ATP Tour and has stunned the tennis world by his performances this week. The Frenchman has upset back to back seeds here at the 2021 Gstaad Open, defeating #5 Federico Delbonis in the Round of 16 and then #4 Cristian Garin in the Quarter-Finals. His win over Garin was hugely surprising as the Chilean is one of the best clay court players in the world. The youngster showed remarkable composure to hold his nerve in the third set tiebreaker, winning it 13-11. His confidence will be sky high heading into his Semi-Final match against Laslo Djere, and after defeating Garin will certainly think that another win is achievable.

This will be the first meeting between the two men on the ATP Tour, and it is sure to be an exciting battle. While it looks simple on paper due to the huge gulf between their rankings, this is a tough match to predict. Laslo Djere is a seasoned veteran with two ATP titles to his name, and ranked over 100 spots higher than his opponent Hugo Gaston. It would be easy to select the Serbian to win, but I am going to do the opposite and back Gaston here. The young Frenchman is playing without fear, and with maturity beyond his years. It won’t be easy, but I do think that he has the tools to win here against the sometimes erratic Djere, and I am going to back Gaston to win in three tough sets, reaching his first ever ATP Final here at the 2021 Gstaad Open.
