TennisSection previews the 2021 Umag Open as Richard Gasquet (4) meets Damir Dzumhur in the Quarter-Finals on Friday July 23rd, 2021.
Two ATP Tour veterans do battle here in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Umag Open. Fourth seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet will play Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia for a berth in the Semi-Finals. Both men have been solid so far here in Umag and are yet to drop a set. Who will go one step further and advance to the Semis?
Richard Gasquet is currently ranked #59 on the ATP Tour and is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Umag Open. The Frenchman has had a long and very successful career, which unfortunately seem to be approaching its end. While he is not quite the player he once was, he remains a very dangerous player and is not someone to underestimate. Gasquet has been having a poor season by his standards, with a couple Quarter-Finals sprinkled between some early-round losses. He won his opening round match over Alessandro Giannessi 7-6, 6-4 and enters this match against Damir Dzumhur as the favorite to advance.
Damir Dzumhur is unseeded here at the 2021 Umag Open and is currently ranked #127 on the ATP Tour. The Bosnian is a veteran of the tour, and has won three titles throughout his career. Dzumhur was once ranked as high as #23 in the world, but since achieving that milestone has largely disappointed and finds himself languishing on the Challenger Tour at times. He has been outstanding so far here in Umag, defeating Filip Horansky in the First Round before crushing the dangerous Marco Cecchinato 6-3. 6-1 in the Round of 16. While he enters this match against Richard Gasquet as the underdog he has built some momentum over the past few days and is capable of making things difficult for the Frenchman.
This will be the second career meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Richard Gasquet leading the head to head 1-0. They played three years ago in Montpelier, with the Frenchman winning in straight sets. While a lot has changed for them since then, I expect a similar result. Damir Dzumhur has not played anything resembling world-class tennis for years, and even though Gasquet is not as consistent a performer as he once was, he still has more than enough quality to get the win here. I expect a solid performance from the veteran Frenchman, as he books his spot in the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Umag Open.
