TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Karolina Pliskova takes on Alize Cornet in the Round of 64 on Sunday, July 25th, 2021.
Will Alize Cornet pull off a stunner to move through? Will Karolina Pliskova get an easy win under her belt to kick off her campaign? Friday’s contest will be a good one, to see whether Pliskova has the level to be one of the main gold medal contenders. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?
Karolina Pliskova is coming into this tournament with what you would hope is plenty of confidence, considering she just made a run to the finals of Wimbledon. She definitely has the level to win gold for her country, in my eyes it’s all about how she is able to transfer from grass to hard, and if she can do that really well, she can do it. However, only looking to tomorrows match, she should just focus on serving well, and opportunities will come to her on return as long as she stays steady like we know she can.
Alize Cornet is coming into this matchup with not very much confidence, considering her results in recent tournaments as well as her record against Pliskova. She’ll have to hope her opponent is off her game because otherwise, she won’t have much of a chance to go through. However, if there were to be a miracle, she would have to play very aggressively, move Karolina around the court with short angles and drop shots, and lots of tactical play with slices and bringing her opponent into the net.
Karolina Pliskova and Alize Cornet have played four times before, with Karolina Pliskova leading the head to head 3-1. Three of those meetings have been this year, with all three going to Pliskova. In my eyes, this sets the winner in stone for tomorrow, however, you can never be too sure. The one win for Cornet came in 2013, making it virtually irrelevant. However, both players should be quite familiar with one another, so Cornet should know what she needs to adjust for tomorrow if she wants a chance at moving on.
