Third seeded American Taylor Fritz will face Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open. Fritz has been having a fairly inconsistent season by his standards this year and will be hoping for a strong showing this week to get things back on track. Can he advance here as expected to only his third Quarter-Final of the year? Or can the unseeded Marchenko cause the massive upset and reach his first?
Taylor Fritz is the third seed here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open and is ranked #37 on the ATP Tour. The American has long been heralded as the heir to American tennis, but has never quite reached the heights that were expected of him. Age is still on his side and he enters this event here in Mexico as one of the main contenders for the title. After a relatively poor season where he has reached two Semi-Finals in Sardinia and Qatar, he has also had numerous early-round losses and will be hoping for a deep run here to get his ranking back into the top 30. Fritz enters this match against Illya Marchenko as the big favorite, and will be aiming to use his big serve and forehand to dominate his opponent here.
Illya Marchenko is unseeded here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open, and is ranked #161 on the ATP Tour. Like his opponent Taylor Fritz, the Ukrainian has been having a very inconsistent season, losing in the First Round or Qualifying Rounds in his past 5 tournaments. Despite his struggles, he was impressive in his win over the in-form Peter Gojowczyk, defeating the German in straight sets in the First Round. During that match Marchenko served extremely well, and controlled the tempo of the match from the baseline against his opponent that as favored to win the match. Despite that performance, he enters this match against Taylor Fritz as the underdog and is not expected to get much out of this match.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Taylor Fritz leading the head to head 1-0. They met five years ago in Nice, with the American winning in straight sets. I expect a similar result here, with Fritz likely to dominate this match from start to finish. I do not think that Illya Marchenko will have any answers for the American’s huge serve-forehand combo, and I am expecting a dominant performance. This draw is set up nicely for him to go on a deep run here, and Taylor Fritz will advance to the Quarter-Finals at the 2021 Los Cabos Open without many issues.
