Yet another surprising Quarter-Final matchup awaits us at the 2021 Swedish Open in Bastad. unseeded duo Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain will face Slovakian Norbert Gombos for a spot in the Semi-Finals. Both men have played solid tennis and upset higher-ranked opponents to get to this stage, who will take it one step further by advancing to the Semis here at the Nordea Open?
Roberto Carballes Baena is unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open and is currently ranked #97 on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard is a very experienced clay-court specialist, with a very solid all-court game. After a pretty good start to the year he has been in somewhat of a slump lately, and will be delighted to have regained some form here in Bastad. He has always been a very inconsistent player, as evidenced by his huge upset win over Denis Shapovalov at Roland Garros, and then going into a prolonged slump. When he is on there is no doubting his quality, and he has shown that here, especially with his upset win over third seeded Fabio Fognini. In this form he enters this match against Norbert Gombos as the very slight favorite, but there isn’t much to separate the two.
Norbert Gombos is currently ranked just two spots below his Quarter-Final opponent Roberto Carballes Baena at #99 on the ATP Tour. Like his opponent, he has had mixed results lately, and has found form at the right time here at the 2021 Swedish Open. He has had two solid upset wins so far here in Bastad, defeating Pablo Cuevas in the First Round before a very impressive win over eighth seed Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 16. He has struggled a bit with his serve but has made up for it at the baseline, creating numerous break opportunities. He starts this match as the slight betting underdog, but in this type of form he is more than capable of getting the win here and it is dead even in my opnion.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it is almost certain to be a very close battle. Both men are in a similar spot in the rankings, and have been in outstanding form so far here at the 2021 Swedish Open. This match can really go either way, and the safest pick here is probably the over on games, or the match to go to three sets. If I had to pick a winner, I would go with Roberto Carballes Baena. He has more big match experience and his upside is slightly higher in my opinion. Norbert Gombos can keep it close and is capable of winning, but I’m backing the Spaniard to win here and advance to the Semi-Finals here in Bastad.
