TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Roger Federer (6) meets Lorenzo Sonego (23) in the Round of 16 on Monday, July 5th 2021.
Will Lorenzo Sonego get another win against one of the members of the Big 3 to have then beaten 2/3 of them? Will Roger Federer continue improving on his game as he aims to get himself in contention for the title here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships? Both players will come out and give it their all, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Lorenzo Sonego eased through his Round of 32 match against James duckworth, beating the Australian in straight sets 6-3/6-4/6-4. Lorenzo Sonego has been performing well on grass recently, making the Final in Eastbourne right before this tournament and now here in the second week. However, Lorenzo Sonego has not really had a tough draw to get this far. Lorenzo met Pedro Sousa, Daniel Elahi Galan, and James Duckworth, no one really able to push him to the limits. Now that Lorenzo Sonego meets the greatest grass court player of all time in Roger Federer, he will have to hope for a poor performance from his opponent who has played much tougher competition to get here.
Roger Federer put on a solid display of tennis in the Round of 32, beating the Brit, Cameron Norrie, in 4 sets 6-4/6-4/5-7/6-4. Roger Federer was in control for the majority of those 3 first sets, even having break points towards the end of the third, but Norrie saved those and then the British crowd gave Norrie all the energy to get him over the line in stealing that set. Roger Federer will be both happy and unhappy with that performance because he was able to get out of a tough situation after losing that third set, but he should have closed that match out in 3 sets when he had those 2 break points to then serve for the match. Roger will know he still has stuff to build on, but he still has the better momentum entering this Round of 16 match against Lorenzo Sonego.
Roger Federer and Lorenzo Sonego have met 1 time before, with Roger Federer leading the head to head 1-0. They met on clay in Paris 2 years ago and Roger cruised 6-2/6-4/6-4. Since then, Lorenzo has improved drastically and he has become one of the most in form players of the year, winning a title and reaching the Eastbourne Final right before Wimbledon. However, Roger Federer on grass is different, and although Norrie stole a set off of him, the fact that he is a lefty helps a lot as Federer is not at his best against lefties. Roger will learn from his mistakes in his prior match and he will not let them happen again here to make his way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
