TennisSection previews the 2021 Queen’s Open as Matteo Berrettini (1) meets Andy Murray (WC) in the Round of 16 on Thursday, June 17th 2021.
Will the 5 time Queen’s Open Champion, Andy Murray, be able to knock out the number 1 seed here as he looks to get ready for Wimbledon? Will Matteo Berrettini be able to find his feet on grass as he looks to bring the momentum he generated on clay here to the 2021 Queen’s Open? Both players will be very determined to get the win here, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals. Who will it be?
Andy Murray showed us some amazing tennis in his return to the ATP Tour and to a main tour grass event, beating Benoit Paire in straight sets 6-3/6-2. Andy Murray is so good on this surface, and he has won Wimbledon in the past, as well as the Queen’s Open 5 times. The last time Murray was here, he also won the Double’s title with Feliciano Lopez. The story is, when it comes to Queen’s, Andy Murray loves to give it his best and put on a show for the British fans. However, Andy will need to be at his absolute best if he is to beat the No.9 in the world, Matteo Berrettini, who is a power hitter.
Matteo Berrettini came through two tight sets in the Round of 32 against his fellow Italian, Stefano Travaglia, winning 7-6/7-6. Matteo is more of a clay and hard court player, but I am sure with some adjustments to his game he will be able to also be strong on grass. Matteo Berrettini has a huge serve, and a big forehand, but his backhand and his backhand slice need improvement. If he is able to master those, he can be successful on grass (as he was in 2019 when he won the Stuttgart Open), because the ball will bounce so low and will put opponents like Andy Murray in awkward positions.
Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray have met 1 time before, with Andy Murray leading the head to head 1-0. Although Matteo has been in strong form since his return from injury this year, he will need some more matches under his belt to feel at his best on grass. Matteo struggled to win 2 tight sets against Travaglia who is not a better player than Andy Murray, and I believe that because we are here in Britain at the 2021 Queen’s Open, I see Andy pulling off a great performance and getting the upset under his belt to show everyone that he is ready for Wimbledon.
