TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Karolina Pliskova (8) meets Liudmila Samsonova in the Round of 16 on Monday July 5th, 2021.
Can the Wild Card Liudmila Samsonova continue her phenomenal winning streak on grass? The Russian has simply been outstanding over the past few weeks and is looking unstoppable here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Next up for her is the eighth seeded Karolina Pliskova, the former world number one who is seemingly starting to find form after a long rough patch. This is looking like a very tight battle here in the Round of 16, who will get the win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at Wimbledon?
Karolina Pliskova is the number eight seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is currently ranked #13 on the WTA Tour. The Czech star is a former number one that has achieved everything there is to in tennis, apart from winning a Grand Slam title. She has come close before, reaching the Semis or better in every slam other than this one, and Wimbledon is surprisingly the only one in which she has not made it past the Round of 16. Pliskova has played very well so far here at Wimbledon, and came through her three matches without losing a set. While she will be high on confidence and is highly experienced, she will have a huge test ahead her in the form of Liudmila Samsonova, the grass court “sensation” who is in red-hot form now. The eighth seed is the favorite here but will have to be at her best to advance to the Quarters for the first time.
Liudmila Samsonova is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is ranked #65 on the WTA Tour. The Russian Wild Card is currently on a ten match winning streak, including her title run at the Berlin Grass Court Championships the week before, where she defeated several top players en route to the title. She has continued that fine form into Wimbledon, notably defeating Jessica Pegula and Sloane Stephens en route to the Round of 16 in her Wimbledon debut. She struggled to hold serve at times against Stephens, being broken a whopping five times, but made up for it by breaking six times of her own. She really is on a serious hot-streak, and rankings may as well be cast aside when she is in this type of form. Despite her much lower ranking she should be considered the slight favorite here against her opponent Karolina Pliskova, and this match really is shaping up to be a battle to reach the Quarter-Finals here at Wimbledon.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA tour, and it could be a classic. Karolina Pliskova is a highly experienced and explosive player that is a threat on every surface. However, if there is one surface where she can be vulnerable, it is grass. Not too much would have been expected of her opponent Liudmila Samsonova up to a few weeks ago, but her recent form over the past two weeks has made everyone sit up and take notice. The oddsmakers have noticed too, as she is surprisingly one of the favorites to win the title here at Wimbledon now. While current form suggests that Samsonova will win this, the experience of Pliskova should not be discounted, and I think that this will go the distance. However, the Russian seems unstoppable at the moment and I see her taking this match in three sets. In yet another stunner, Liudmila Samsonova will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
