TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Aryna Sabalenka (2) meets Elena Rybakina (18) in the Round of 16 on Monday July 5th, 2021.
Second seeded Aryna continues on her quest to win a maiden Grand Slam title here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Belarusian is the best female player around that has not won a major and will be hoping to correct that here at the All-England Club. Can the eighteenth seeded Kazakh Elena Rybakina stop her? They both have looked strong here at Wimbledon, who will get the win and advance to the Quarter-Finals?
Aryna Sabalenka is currently ranked #4 on the WTA Tour and is the second seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. While she is yet to win a major title, she has been one of the most consistent players on the Tour as evidenced by her high ranking. She has dominated at everl level other than the Grand Slams, and with Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka not playing here at Wimbledon it seems like the stars could be aligning for her here. She crushed Maria Osorio Serrano for the loss of just three games in the Third Round, playing her trademark ultra-aggressive tennis and serving extremely well. Her opponent here Elena Rybakina is a very formidable foe and she will have to be at her best to get the victory here, and advance to her first Grand Slam Quarter-Final.
Elena Rybakina is the #18 seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is ranked #20 on the WTA Tour. The Kazakh has improved drastically in recent months, reaching the Quarter-Finals of Roland Garros and her maiden grass-court Semi-Final in Eastbourne. She is an extremely talented player with powerful groundstrokes on both wings, and will be very difficult to beat here. She has been cruising through the draw here, easily defeating Kristina Mladenovic, Claire Liu and Shelby Rogers without losing a set. Her next opponent Aryna Sabalenka will be her toughest test yet here at Wimbledon but she seems ready for a challenge. Rybakina will know that she cannot match Sabalenka for power, and will have to play smart, consistent tennis to reach the Quarters in her first main draw appearance here at Wimbledon.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, with Aryna Sabalenka leading the head to head series 2-0. While she has won on each occasion, they have both been close three set encounters. I am expecting more of the same here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Both women have been playing outstanding tennis, and this is looking like an extremely close contest. They have contrasting styles, and Elena Rybakina’s all-court game should match up well against the power game that her opponent is likely to play. This will likely go the distance, but I am backing Aryna Sabalenka to finally get over the hump and advance to her first Grand Slam Quarter-Final here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
